RINs - (Renewable Identification Numbers) are 38-character numeric codes generated by a producer or importer of renewable fuel. Renewable Fuel Producers and Importers are required to generate RINs when they produce or import a batch of renewable fuel.  RINs represent gallons of renewable fuel produced/imported and are transferred with the fuel until the fuel is blended. RINs can be transferred to any counterparty any number of times.

RINs were developed as a basic currency for the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) program for credits and  trading.  They are also used by obligated parties (refiners, importers, and certain blenders of gasoline) to demonstrate compliance.

RINs are valid for the calendar year generated, and the following year.

*RINs format:
KYYYYCCCCFFFFFBBBBBRRDSSSSSSSSEEEEEEEE

K
= RIN Type Flag (1 = assigned; 2 = separated)
YYYY = Year of Batch Production (year it leaves the facility)
CCCC = Company registration ID
FFFFF = Facility registration ID
BBBBB
= Serial Batch Number (assigned by the producer/importer)
RR = Equivalence Value for the renewable fuel
D
= Renewable Energy Type (1 = cellulosic; 2 = noncellulosic)
SSSSSSSS = RIN Block Starting Gallon Number
EEEEEEEE = RIN Block Ending Gallon Number

Amount of Rins Created:
Non cellulosic ethanol 1 gallon receives 1 RIN
Cellulosic ethanol 1 gallon receives 2.5 RINs
Biodiesel 1 gallon receives 1.5 RINs

*RINS trading provides:
     an outlet for obligated parties to acquire shortcomings of compliance through the purchase of RINs in the open marketplace.
     non-obligated parties an opportunity to sell their extra RINs
     a market place for speculators to buy and sell.

BiofuelsConnect brokers RINs on behalf of traders, producers, blenders, and obligated parties.
